The type of matcha you use can have a big effect on the taste of your matcha tea latte. We would recommend going for organic matcha, preferably with a blend of first and second harvest leaves, which gives the ingredient a more robust taste. The highest quality matcha available on the market is ceremonial matcha, which is ground extra fine to give it a more delicate taste. For those with more of a sweet tooth, there is also sweet matcha, Japanese matcha mixed with pure cane sugar, which is the perfect choice for those looking to make more indulgent matcha tea lattes. 


Tools to Make It

You are first going to want to secure something that will break up the potential clumps formed in the matcha and milk, especially when the beverage is iced. It’s also helpful if you have a kettle where you can choose the exact temperature: but not necessary. If you cannot measure the temperature on your kettle, then transfer the boiling water into a cold cup, to lower the temperature a little before adding to your matcha tea latte.

  • 1 tsp matcha green tea powder
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 3 tbsp warm water
  • 250ml cold milk or 300ml hot milk


  1. First, you need to prepare matcha tea by whisking together water and sifted matcha powder to make sure there aren’t any clumps. The water should be warm, or about 175°F, because otherwise, it can cause the matcha to become bitter. 
  2. The second step is to froth and heat the milk. But make sure the milk doesn’t boil! It should simmer, warm, and then be frothed - but many milk brothers have the function to do both simultaneously. Pour the warm, frothy milk into a mug - preferably a glass mug so you can see the magic that will happen next!
  3. Pour the prepared matcha tea into the milk. The green liquid will slowly mix into the milk, creating a beautiful marbling effect, and eventually turning the whole beverage green. 
  4. To finish, you can add some honey or sugar to add sweetness, and maybe scatter some matcha powder on the top to bring that extra je ne sais quoi!


But what about drinking matcha tea lattes when it’s hot? If you want to make an iced matcha tea latte, you can choose to add cold frothed non-dairy milk to the recipe, and maybe even add a couple of ice cubes at the end for extra refreshment.
